What is EDTA?
EDTA is an aminopolycarboxylic acid, short for Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, with the chemical formula [CH2N (CH2CO2H) 2] 2. It is in the 'poly' carboxylic group due to the presence of more than one bonded -COOH group in its structure. It is also in the 'amino' group due to the -NH2 bond to its structure. This white, water-soluble solid acid is commonly used to bind to iron and calcium ions. EDTA binds the ions as a hexadentate (“hexadentate”) chelator. EDTA, especially disodium EDTA; It is produced as some salt types such as sodium calcium edetate and tetrasodium EDTA. It is a type of acid used in molecular biology applications.
There are other names used to refer to EDTA. These are the long version of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, as we mentioned first; chelating agent, chelating agent; 60-00-4; Na2 and Na4.
How is EDTA Produced?
Both single and two-step synthesis can be used in the production of EDTA. In the two-stage synthesis production of EDTA, the EDTA salt was contaminated with the NTA salt. In the single-stage synthesis EDTA production, there is no separation process. Although the setup and equipment costs are lower in single-stage production, higher purity EDTA production is possible after two-stage production.
The production of EDTA for industrial use is formaldehyde containing cyanide; It is made by reaction and synthesis with compounds such as ethylenediamine, HCN & NaCN. After the formation of the sodium salt of EDTA, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid are used to acidify this salt.
