What is Barium Chloride?

Barium chloride is an inorganic compound with the formula BaCl2. It is one of the most common water-soluble salts of barium. Like most other barium salts, it is white, poisonous and imparts a yellow-green color to the flame. It is also hygroscopic, first converting to the dihydrate BaCl2(H2O)2. Although inexpensive to manufacture, barium chloride finds limited application in the laboratory and industry. Especially its toxicity limits its usage area.

BaCl2 crystallizes in two ways. One form has the cubic fluorite (CaF2) structure and the other has the orthorhombic cotunite (PbCl2) structure. Both polymorphs harbor a preference for the large Ba2+ ion for coordination numbers greater than six. The Ba2+ coordination is 8 in the fluorite structure and 9 in the cotunite structure. When the cotunite BaCl2 is exposed to pressures of 7-10 GPa, it transforms into a third structure, a monoclinic post-kotunite phase. Ba2+ coordination number increases from 9 to 10.

In aqueous solution BaCl2 behaves like a simple salt; It is a 1:2 electrolyte in water and the solution exhibits a neutral pH. Their solutions react with the sulfate ion to form a thick white precipitate of barium sulfate.

Ba2 + + SO42− → BaSO4

Oxalate affects a similar reaction:

Ba2 + + C2O42− → BaC2O4

When mixed with sodium hydroxide it gives dihydroxide, which is moderately soluble in water.

How is Barium Chloride produced?

On an industrial scale, barium chloride is prepared from barite in a two-step process:

BaSO4 + 4 C → BaS + 4 CO

This first step needs high temperatures.

BaS + 2 HCl → BaCl2 + H2S

Chlorine can be used instead of HCl.

Barium chloride can in principle be prepared from barium hydroxide or barium carbonate. These basic salts react with hydrochloric acid to give hydrated barium chloride.
