What is Ammonia Liquid?

Ammonia is a nitrogen and hydrogen compound with the formula NH3. A stable binary hydride and the simplest pnictogen hydride, ammonia is a colorless gas with a distinctive characteristic with a pungent odor. It is a common nitrogenous waste, especially among aquatic organisms, and contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to food and fertilizers. Directly or indirectly, ammonia is a building block for the synthesis of many pharmaceutical products and is used in many commercial cleaning products. It is mainly collected by the downward displacement of both air and water.

In nature – both terrestrial and on the outer planets of the Solar System; Although Mars is common – like Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn – ammonia is both caustic and dangerous in its concentrated form. Ammonia is a chemical produced from nitrogenous animal and vegetable substances and found in trace amounts in nature. Ammonia and ammonium salts are also found in small amounts in rainwater, while ammonium chloride and ammonium sulfate are found in volcanic areas; Ammonium bicarbonate crystals have been found in Patagonia guano. The kidneys secrete ammonia to neutralize excess acid. Ammonium salts are dispersed in fertile soils and sea water.

Ammonia is a colorless gas with a pungent odor. It is lighter than air, its density is 0.589 times higher than air. Easily liquefied due to strong hydrogen bonding between molecules; The liquid boils at -33.3 °C and freezes as white crystals at -77.7 °C.

Liquid ammonia has strong ionizing powers and can be used in insulated containers in laboratories without additional cooling. Liquid ammonia is a strong solvent.

How is Ammonia Liquid produced?

Ammonia is one of the most produced inorganic chemicals, with global production reported as 175 million tons in 2018.

Mass ammonia production mostly uses the Haber – Bosch process, a gas phase reaction between hydrogen (H2) and nitrogen (N2) at moderately high temperature (450 °C) and high pressure (100 standard atmospheres (10 MPa)).

How does Ammonia Liquid look?

The liquid is colorless, with a pungent odour.

In which sectors is Ammonia Liquid used?

  • As fertilizer in agriculture
  • In nitrogen synthesis
  • In cleaning materials
  • In industrial coolers
  • In geothermal power plants
  • wood industry
  • textile sector
  • oil industry

What are the usage areas (processes) of Ammonia Liquid?

  • In the US, as of 2019, about 88 of % of ammonia was used as fertilizer, salts, solutions, or anhydrous. When applied to the soil, it helps to increase the yield of crops such as corn and wheat.
  • Ammonia is a direct or indirect precursor of most nitrogen-containing compounds. Almost all synthetic nitrogen compounds are derived from ammonia. Here, an important derivative, nitric acid, emerges. Nitric acid is used in the production of fertilizers, explosives and many organonitrogen compounds.
  • Household ammonia is a solution of NH3 in water and is used as a general purpose cleaner for many surfaces. Because ammonia provides a relatively non-marking shine, one of its most common uses is to clean glass, porcelain and stainless steel. It is also often used to clean ovens and dissolve burns. Household ammonia ranges from % 5 to % 10 ammonia by weight.
  • Ammonia solutions (% 5-10 by weight) are used as household cleaners, especially for glass. These solutions are irritating to the eyes and mucous membranes (respiratory and digestive tract) and, to a lesser extent, the skin. Care should be taken to never mix the chemical with any liquid containing bleach, as a toxic gas may be produced. Mixing with chlorine-containing products or strong oxidizers such as household bleach can create chloramines.
  • Ammonia solutions ranging from % 16 to % 25 are used in the fermentation industry as a nitrogen source for microorganisms and to adjust pH during fermentation.
  • Ammonia is a useful refrigerant due to its evaporation property. Before chlorofluorocarbons became widespread, they were used a lot.
  • Anhydrous ammonia is widely used in industrial cooling applications and hockey rinks due to its high energy efficiency and low cost.
  • In addition to its use in modern vapor compression cooling, it is used in absorption refrigerators as a mixture with hydrogen and water.
  • The Kalina cycle, which is becoming increasingly important for geothermal power plants, depends on the wide boiling range of the ammonia-water mixture. The ammonia refrigerant is also used in the S1 radiator on the International Space Station to regulate the internal temperature and enable temperature-dependent experiments.
  • Ammonia is used to clean SO2 from the combustion of fossil fuels and the resulting product is converted to ammonium sulfate for use as fertilizer.
  • Liquid ammonia is used in the processing of cotton materials that give properties such as mercerization using alkalis. It is especially used in the pre-washing of wool.
  • At standard temperature and pressure, ammonia is less dense than atmosphere and has approximately % 45-48 of the buoyancy of hydrogen or helium. Ammonia has sometimes been used to fill weather balloons as a lifting gas. Because of its relatively high boiling point (compared to helium and hydrogen), ammonia can potentially be cooled and liquefied in an airship to reduce buoyancy and add ballast (and return it to gas to add buoyancy and reduce ballast).
  • Ammonia is used in wood furniture to darken the color of the wood.
  • Ammonia can be used to power hydrogen fuel cells.
  • Ammonia is used to neutralize the acidity of refined petroleum by-products.
